Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month? In fact, 2023 marks the 50th year of the program! The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the group behind Nutrition Month, focuses on finding new ways to share updates in healthful eating to help everyone make more informed choices and develop healthful eating and physical activity habits.
Because our caregiving team spends a lot of time with our clients grocery shopping, meal prepping, and sticking to doctor-recommended nutrition plans, we wanted to share the most helpful resources coming from the Academy this year! Explore our favorites below:
Eating Right for Older Adults
Why we like it: This guide shares important information on why proper nutrition is crucial to healthy aging and shares easy-to-follow meal instructions like:
- Make half your plate fruits and vegetables
- Make a least half your grains whole
- Switch to fat-free or low-fat dairy
20 Health Tips
Why we like it: The Academy put together this very helpful series of tips with actionable changes you can make to improve your nutrition like eating breakfast, fixing healthy snacks, and how to eat out without ditching your nutrition goals!
Eating Right On a Budget
Why we like it: As caregivers, we work with clients across the income spectrum, from older adults managing limited budgets to helping people recover from surgery while being off from work. Sometimes, people have to make their paychecks stretch a little bit further and this guide gives great advice for saving money on nutritious foods.
Smart Tips for Plant-Based Eating
Why we like it: Many of our clients are managing illnesses like heart disease and diabetes that require a higher fiber, lower fat diet. Oftentimes, limiting foods like red meat and increasing foods like vegetables and dark leafy greens come with these kinds of diagnoses, which lend themselves to a more plant-based diet. This resource is packed full of ways to help modify your eating habits to incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and grains and less meat.
