Shawn E. Long, MD, FAAFP, MBA

owner

Dr. Shawn Long is a Family Physician with over 20 years of patient care experience. Much of that time has been dedicated to caring for geriatric populations and patients with chronic medical problems. He has a special interest in the management of care during transitions such as post-hospitalization or discharge from a skilled nursing unit back to home. As a physician, he prioritizes helping patients remain independent by focusing on preventive measures and disease self-management.

Dr. Long’s career includes executive and senior leadership positions in academic healthcare, rural healthcare, community health centers, and corporate healthcare.   He has extensive experience in management oversight of varied health care professionals including Nursing Aids, Medical Assistants, Nurses, Physicians, and Advanced Practice Clinicians.   Dr. Long leverages this experience to provide oversight of the training and development of ameriCARE Pittsburgh’s Caregivers and oversight of Clients’ care plans.   He values an emphasis on empathetic, compassionate care for a safe and positive environment.

Dr. Shawn Long focuses on building trust between clients and their care team by facilitating a team-based care model where clients’ needs and preferences are addressed in a coordinated effort. Dr. Long’s version of this care model focuses on collaboration and communication between all parties, including the clients, the ameriCARE Pittsburgh team, the clients’ medical providers, and the clients’ families. ameriCARE Pittsburgh Caregivers play a vital role in this model, partnering with their clients while providing the safest, best possible in-home care available.

A note from Dr. Shawn Long:

“I’ve witnessed the stress and discomfort that loss of independence can cause for elderly people. Many times, seniors experience significant declines in physical and mental health because they cannot access non-medical support services or have little to no help communicating with their medical care team. I was inspired to start an in-home care business that focuses on facilitating independence while working to maintain the physical and mental health of our clients by bridging the gap between health care services and in-home non-medical care.”

Dr. Long is laser focused on helping ameriCARE Pittsburgh caregivers feel empowered, motivated, and connected to our team, our clients, and the communities we serve.

A note from Dr. Nayli Long

“During my years as a pharmacist, I saw so many patients who didn’t have anyone to care for them, advocate for their medical needs, or even help them maintain their daily routines. I would spend my time after work visiting patients, bringing them their prescriptions, or helping them around the store to get what they needed for their everyday lives. I would spend my weekends doing brown bag events so patients could come by and talk about their medicines with me. Often, I would go to their homes and simply talk to them for an hour or two so they could stay mentally active and have connection and engagement. It was clear the aging community here in Pittsburgh needed better support and we’re here to help fill that gap.”
